Map of Neighborhood Local Schools
At the time of the Commissioners Plan for laying out the Manhattan Island into a grid of streets and blocks was being contemplated this area was farmland, estates or open land belonging to the city corporation. The historical names that have survived attest to the land owners whose accomplishments or holdings were significant. Hendrick Hendricksen Kip was a Dutch settler and progenitor of the Kip family. Four generations of Kips succeeded Hendrick in owning property on 35th St. and 2nd Ave until 1851 when the mansion was demolished. Robert Murray, and 18th century merchant bought land for a country estate just north of the Kips property. Story goes that in 1776 British soldiers crossed the East River in preparation to take Manhattan. Mrs. Murray, gracious hostess, delayed the British officers in her home long enough for General Putnam’s troops to speed north to join George Washington and so elude being trapped by the British.
